ragtags studio central: sarah's random this & that

random means "having no definite aim or purpose," (1655), taken from "at random" (1565), "at great speed" (thus, "carelessly, haphazardly"). In 1980s college student slang, it somehow, and sadly, acquired a distinct sense of "inferior, undesirable." (Online Etymology Dictionary, Douglas Harper) Well, okay, fine, Mr. Online Etymology Dictionary person, but THIS is the 21st Century. It's a whole new ball of wax.

More True Colors {behind the scenes}

I kept a separate journal of the pages I made for each of the True Colors journals, notes from the other artists, etc. This was a re-purposed coaster, a mini extra to go with pages in Monica's little Green book.

Portrait of the Artist, in her studio, reviewing

Now, just imagine I'm sitting right here in front of you, going on about the swell book I just read:

Fabulous photos, interesting interviews, intelligent info...style, naturally is an excellent source/guidebook for anyone looking to green their personal style. The 50+ page index of resources --- web addys, street addys, and phone #s for manufacturers, shops, and nonprofits worldwide makes it worth the price alone; the rest makes it feel like you just got your hands on the biggest bargain of the summer, combining solid info with a sense of humor and a dash of perspective. For those just starting out on the road to green living, this book will serve as a source of inspiration and provide enough basic steps to getting you on the right track. Feel like you already know it all? Think again. There is SO much packed into these 300+ pages that I can guarantee there is something new under the sun. Not just fashion/style either; skin and hair care receive serious coverage (!!!) and consideration. Vegan? There are plenty of helpful and fun notes and sources listed for you as well as for straight up eco and/or vintage fashionistas. Comment

New Year's Ragtags

Happy 2008 to ya! I have been having a spate of nosebleeds that has kept me away from the keyboard - can not let it get all over that! - let alone everywhere in Art (my go-to room for making it). . .but have a few loose ends to tie up/tell you about. . .need to get back to my emails, too. . .
First, the winner of the calendar is Jolene! Yay, Jolene, hope you'll love it - it's on its way.
Secondly, today is my little mum's birthday; she would have been 76 - Happy Birthday, Little Mummy, wherever you are. Hope you're having fun.
Next, a couple of excellent Christmas gifts I received to show off.

This darling little ornament just arrived from my trés arty AND artistic friend
Tawnya in Denver - yes! we need to get together, woman. . .
Chai - the real deal - Silver and Heather remembered and brought me this
pretty little bag of it from Adivasi in Brattleboro, Vermont. . .
Went shopping at the M.A.C. store in Cherry Creek where
Corina got me Viva Glam VI -
"In the spirit of all Viva Glam, every cent raised goes to the M·A·C AIDS Fund
to support the fight against HIV/AIDS."

Another tiny treat from Tawnya:

Got lucky (again!) from Lisa with Taco Pups:
Santa left one of these (with a note) cool gifts for each and everyone who celebrated Christmas at our house. It's a 'green' To-Go-Box, with a movable divider, so we no longer have to be environmentally care less when we eat out:

On New Year's Eve, I went to First Night with September and the boys (Colin was home a little under the weather and it was oh so freezing out). First we watched some film shorts made for kids, then a magic show and finally, Bella Luna, a French -style (Italian name) cirque. They were just grand.

Also went to a matinee with my girlfriend Monica; we saw Juno and absolutely relished it!

I am going to be reviewing Links, the new book by the lovely and witty (and generous) jewelry designer Jean Yates on Amazon in the next few days, so be sure to log on to see what I have to say!

Finally, if you haven't yet ordered your copy of Pasticcio 2,
well, what are you waiting for?
Get it here!

Save the Earth - but not today

Okay, fine, I admit it, sometimes I don't really think through the consequences of my own good intentions. I have been a little TOO good about the bag dealio. You know, you go to the market, they inquire in a bored voice, "Paper or plastic?" and you cheerily chirp, "Oh, neither, no worries, see I brought my own," (though you secretly totally wanna say, "Um, really, I like guys. . .") or alternately, "Naaaah, whatevuh, I can just stick all this s*** I probably don't really need anyway in my pockets. There. Ohhhh, did I leave that pretty little Comice sitting on the counter? Well, hehehe, that's not gonna fit in the old pockie, I'll just stuff it down the front of my shirt."

What, you never follow either of those scripts? Well, you're a better man than I. So, I find myself in a dilemma. I really DON'T have any plastic shopping bags, and I sure could use some for my Art 101 project, due right after New Year's.

Haha, fooled ya with that one I bet. No Art 101, but I seriously NO REALLY I TOTALLY MEAN IT, find myself in need of a couple of handfuls of plastic bags for an art thingie I'm starting to work on. I would love if I could get a few from some of you - can trade for them, if I have somethin' you want. . . Would love if any are clear, as I have a vision, or if any have funky writing or images, but will not turn any reasonable offer down.

Let me know if you think you can (or even wanna) help this tree hugger; as the cliché goes, I'll be forever in your debt.
