ragtags studio central: sarah's random this & that

random means "having no definite aim or purpose," (1655), taken from "at random" (1565), "at great speed" (thus, "carelessly, haphazardly"). In 1980s college student slang, it somehow, and sadly, acquired a distinct sense of "inferior, undesirable." (Online Etymology Dictionary, Douglas Harper) Well, okay, fine, Mr. Online Etymology Dictionary person, but THIS is the 21st Century. It's a whole new ball of wax.

better get started

This backdrop (model not included!), designed by Karl Lagerfeld for the 2009 Chanel Couture runway show, is what September wants for Wedding Decor. Not sure when the wedding is gonna be exactly, but I guess we better get started now. Sigh. It IS fabulously pretty though. Maybe we can save it after, for next Mardi Gras. Or our next Garden Party.

Sweater Surgery: it's a little bit Annie & a little bit rock 'n' roll

With hard times upon us, it's time to dig through our closets (our neighbor's too, if they'll let us!) and pull out the sweaters that haven't been worn for the past season or two. Do mull, as some may be classics, or so stylin' they'll come back eventually, and you may really regret having to shell out $50 to get another...but don't mull for too long. Grab a needle and thread and go for it. This book is simple enough for anyone to understand - even non-English speakers could replicate anything in it as the photographs are gorgeous, and go hand in hand with diagrams. More advanced alterers/seamstresses will take off on their own once they see how it works. I looked forward to this book for literally months, and my expectations were realized. I will be trying out as many of these projects as I can sacrifice sweaters!

If you get in a bar room fight. . .

John Martyn
1948-2009
Laid-back, irresistible music to listen to when you're sitting on the front porch at 9:00 on a mid-summer's night, when the heat hasn't quite left the pavement and you're oh so glad just to be alive.

I was tagged by Shirley Ende-Saxe to write 5-7 things about myself. God knows I love to talk about me. If you do too, about YOURself, then tag, you're it!

1. Hadn't bought (or worn) a pair of blue jeans in the past 35 years (denim overalls are not jeans, right?) but recently got 4 pairs of cropped jeans at the ARC. Now I think I might need a pair that's not cropped, too. They are so cozy worn under skirts, better than tights really when it gets so cold and I am not turning on the heater.
2. Was so occupied in the late '70s and early '80s with small children, that when the mid to late '80s happened, I fell in love with its movies and music, and still love to this day.
3. If I know a book is a best seller, even though I am one of the most avid readers I know, I will avoid it unless there's some freaky book miracle where it practically falls in my lap from the sky.
4. Love the artist Margaret Keane, and like the Barenaked Ladies, if I had a million dollars, I would go to the Keane Gallery across from Ghiradelli Square in San Fran, and buy me some swell art, esp. a copy of "Grant Avenue, Chinatown, San Francisco". Or conversely, maybe sell everything I have and buy one of Andy Warhol's Annie Oakleys (yes one is available now and again).
5. I put off scrubbing the kitchen floor until it is disgusting, even though it bothers me if there is even one dirty spot.
6. Fantasies about living alone in large urban areas turn me on, and I don't really get scared. Even though crazy bad things have almost happened to me at times. I guess "I'm lucky, I can walk under ladders."
7. Every now and again I get the urge to cut my hair and then I do it and then I hate it until it grows long again.

Dangerous toys for boys

Alright, I realize this is sideways, so, next time, I'll know! Also, he improved A LOT after this, but it took me forever to get just this minute posted - so that's all for now, folks!
Anyway, this was our birthday prezie to Silv; jumping stilts. He turned 28 on the 10th and now that he's having a kid of his own, we decided to get him a dangerous toy. He is now running down the street, or rather bounding, just like a baby gazelle with newfound forward motion! But when it's below 20 degrees and you fall in these things, ouch! So he's taking a short break. . .
