ragtags studio central: sarah's random this & that

random means "having no definite aim or purpose," (1655), taken from "at random" (1565), "at great speed" (thus, "carelessly, haphazardly"). In 1980s college student slang, it somehow, and sadly, acquired a distinct sense of "inferior, undesirable." (Online Etymology Dictionary, Douglas Harper) Well, okay, fine, Mr. Online Etymology Dictionary person, but THIS is the 21st Century. It's a whole new ball of wax.

I'm workin' on it!!

Here's the "in progress" front of a projie I finally finished, that's my mum, as big sis.
You can see the final version of the front in my photo album, here.

Here's the "scene" from the inside, Rita Hayworth's on the right -
it's a donation piece for the Street Kids of Oaxaca auction.

Lagniappe squared

Just two quick announcements - First, I have several swell new items for sale over at Ragtags Etsy. Free shipping everyday, and I always include a little something for lagniappe! Also, I'm the featured artist for October over on Artsmiths; you can read the interview here - I'd love it if you do, if you would leave a comment or two --- no pressure!

Reprise: Home Companion magazine

From the archives of Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion magazine, the following is reprinted from a paper, scissors, crop article in which I shared the spotlight with Sylvia Luna and Stacie Rife.

Artist's Trade
Artist’s profile: 2
Sarah Fishburn is a respected collage artist who creates atcs, greeting cards, calendars, altered books, original canvases, and more. She also designs layouts for scrapbooking books and magazines. Her latest projects include Transparent Art, a Somerset Studios book. . . Her signature style features a juxtaposition of text, images of children, and vibrant color.
Family and Friends
(b) An old photo of Sarah’s mom, Jean, plays a prominent role. Sarah combined vintage papers and ephemera with a sheet of transparency washed in red ink as the background for the old photograph. For her second atc, a more modern look is achieved with photo choice, layout, and typography.

Dynamic Display
(c) Collecting ATCs is a passion for many artists, but discovering inventive ways to display them can be challenging. Collage artist Sarah Fishburn used a blank accordion-fold book as a quick starting point for her ATC holder. Individual photo frames were cut from scrapbooking papers and adhered with torn strips of fabric and vintage buttons sewn into place. Glued to the book is a collaged image of Sarah’s mother as a small child, a Valentine’s Day message to the woman whom the artist calls her “greatest supporter.”

Emerald counts the days until she receives her FREE copy of Pasticcio . . .

Isn't this 'green' rich, infused, endorphin inducing? Well, it is to me. An awesomly emeraldy shade of malachite. It's the paint on one of several Cabinet de Curiosités gracing Seth Apter's NYC ateliér. Thanks, Seth, for keeping us posted (get it?!), on all things art & colorful,
on who to check out, where to go, what to see.

So, I have two BIG projects I need to finish by Monday.
You may ask, WHY are you posting? I need help! A recommendation.
About a week or so ago, I realized have I felt fairly discombobulated
for most of 2008 - chalking it up to having a couple of
delightfully art-filled wall calendars, but no
Engagement Calendar to Carry With Me Everywhere.
Can't let it happen again in 2009!
Has anyone seen one that's simply irresistable? Let me know!
If I get a fair number of stylin' recommendations, I'll do a drawing -
for - hmm, how about a TOTALLY FREE copy of the next issue of -
say, Pasticcio? The big 70+ pages HOLIDAY issue of Pasticcio?
You know you want it . . .

pretty kitty dog moon jewelry

Jean Yates, the always entertaining, and equally generous, author of the book LINKS, is a frequent contributor to a rather stacked shelf or so of cool publications targeted to jewelry designers. I really think I need to be her regular model/muse - ya know, like Kate Moss for Calvin Klein? Here, you see me wearing her earrings, her pendant . . .

Bluish

O great creator of being, grant us one more hour to perform our art and perfect our lives.
::: Jim Morrison :::
Haven't posted a self-portrait for a good long while - here's one (below you can see an earlier incarnation). Have now mailed out prizes for the last blog prize drawing - I know Sherry got hers, think she liked it okay, hope the rest of you did, too? Will post another prize drawing soon.

In the meantime, and speaking of Blue Meanies,
for your altering pleasure, try this:

Walk on down to Electric Avenue

There are many avenues under the broad category called art,
but at its core, to me, art is simply the language of the soul.

Today's birthday wishes are brought to you by the letter S:

Three winners today, hurray!

Finally got around to drawing some names - bet you all thought it would never happen. If only you could see my life - I am really, really trying to catch up with it - only the funny thing is, every time I think "wow, maybe I am", that's when 67 or so new obstacles appear from like, nowhere!

So here are the super lucky winners, send me your mailing addys, por favor:
Elizabeth Golden
Joanie Hoffman
Sherry Goodloe

I think I am going to pick one more name and send out a little something, but it will be a secret until the recipient receives it; I hope she will be happily surprised. Ummm if I can figure out a way to get an address. . .forgot about that small detail. . .

I have to get going - but wanted to leave you with at least some little visual, so here's our supper, well, not yet created, but waiting to be, straight from the garden.
